 1940’s




1947 Villa Julie Secretarial School founded at Seven Oaks by the Sisters of Notre Dame de Namur.  The original campus consisted of a caretakers cottage, carriage house, chauffeur’s cottage, 4 cottages of servants, chicken house, and barn. The first classes were held in the former Jenkins home and began on October 1, 1947. In Sept. 1948, the caretakers home was remodeled and classes were held in it.

The director of the Villa Julie Secretarial School was Sister Margaret Winifred.

1947 Jackie Robinson is the first African-American signed to play major-league baseball.

1950’s

In 1950, Sister Aloyse Margaret was inaugurated as Head of the Secretarial School.

In 1952, Villa Julie College was founded as a two year college.

In 1953, Sister Marie Delores Cleary was inaugurated as President

In 1954, classes were held in the Jenkins Residence featuring classrooms & a small library. Official approval as a two-year college was granted by the Maryland State Department of Education.

In 1955 , the Secretarial School closes.

In 1958, Villa Julie College incorporated by the State of Maryland.

In 1959, Sister Mary Patrick Furdon was inaugurated as President.

1960’s

In 1962, The Middle States Association of Colleges and Schools awards Villa Julie regional accreditation.

In 1964, Sister Mary Stephen Manuszak is named President of Villa Julie College, and is faced with the problem of declining enrollments. She serves as President, expanding enrollemnts and program offerings, until 1999.

In 1965, State approval is awarded for Villa Julie’s child development program.

In 1965, Transfer programs are offered in the Arts & Sciences, and in Teacher Education.

In 1965, Villa Julie College is given an “A” rating for transferability of credits by American Association of Collegiate Registrars and Admissions Officers.

In 1967, Villa Julie College becomes an independent institution with its own Board of Trustees, including Nicholas F. Mueller (Vice-Pres. Maryland National Bank), Francis A. Gallagher (Business Manager, Loyola College of Maryland), and Robert F. Sweeney, Esq. At this time, Sister Mary Daniel, Provincial and Chairman of the Board, Sister Ann Francis, and Sister Dorothy, who had served the College from its earliest inception, stepped down.

1970’s

In 1970-1971, Villa Julie College built a Student Center, a Learning Resource Center, and an Art Center

In 1972, Villa Julie College, once for women only, became co-educational. Accreditation was reaffirmed by the Middle States Association of Colleges and Schools.

 

An ad campaign that ran a few years after the school went coeducational.  The tagline was “Villa Julie College: Where The Boys Are.”

In 1972, VJC celebrated its 25th Anniversary.

 1980’s

 


Technology Day in 1995. 

In 1982, accreditation was again reaffirmed by the Middle States Association of Colleges and Schools.

In 1984, Villa Julie offers its first Baccalaureate degree in Computer Information Systems.

In 1985, Villa Julie expands its degree programs to include a bachelor’s degree in Paralegal Studies.


In 1985, Work is begun on what is to become Knott Hall.

In 1988, Additional Bachelor’s degrees programs are offered in Administrative Science, Computer Accounting, Liberal Arts and Technology, and Business Information Systems.

In 1988, Saturday classes are first made available for working students. Accreditation as a four-year college is granted by the Middle States Association of Colleges and Schools.

1988 Libyan Terrorists blow up Pan Am flight 103 over Lockerbie,
Scotland.

 1990’s

 
As time went on, the computer lab increased in size and use.

In 1992, Villa Julie launches ATEC (Center for Advanced Technology & Competitiveness), its first Graduate School Program.

In 1993, Cuvilly Hall is renovated to become the Exchange (In 2006, the building reverted back to Cuvilly Hall)

In 1993, Off-Campus Housing was first offered for resident students.
In 1993, (and again in 1998) the Commission of Higher Education and the Middle States Association of Colleges and Schools reaffirms Villa Julie College’s Accreditation.

In 1994, the internet became available on the College network and the College was awarded membership in NCAA Division III.

In 1995, the College began a significant expansion that included a theater, academic center, and gymnasium.

In 1996, the College was granted approval for programs for the prepararation of elementary and early childhood teachers.

That same year, the College received an endorsement for its first Master’s level programs in Advanced Information Technologies.

1991 CERN releases the World Wide Web and makes it free to the public.

 

1993 Terrorists set off a truck full of explosives under the North Tower of the World Trade Center.

2000’s

 

 

In 2000, Dr. Kevin Manning is inaugurated as College President

In 2003, Villa Julie opens residential housing in Owings Mills.

In 2006, Rockland Dining Center and Caves Classrooms and Exercise Center are opened on the Owings Mills Campus.
