Information Literacy Objectives – First Year
Note: ACRL Information Literacy Standards appear in bold-face type, followed by the recommended goals and sample learning objectives for Stevenson students.
Standard 1
The information literate student determines the nature and extent of the information needed.
Goal:
The first-year student recognizes the value of information and how it is organized through the introduction to the research process.Learning Objectives:
The student will be able to:Recognize the need for information sources in order to complete college level assignments.
Identify the library web page as a gateway to information resources.
Indicate how information found in books, periodicals, and web sites differs.
Identify various formats in which information is available.
Describe the characteristics of databases and indexes.
Demonstrate an understanding of call numbers.
Standard 2
The information literate student accesses needed information effectively and efficiently.
Goal:
The first-year student demonstrates a basic understanding of available library services and search tools.Learning Objectives:
The student will be able to:Identify ways to get assistance from a librarian, such as at the Reference Desk, or through e-mail or chat reference.
Demonstrate familiarity with the library catalogue.
Locate books by author, title or subject.
Locate other materials, such as videos or reserves.
Connect to e-books.
Interpret a journal holdings record.
View his/her patron record and renew books online.
Perform a basic search in one of the multidisciplinary periodical databases.
Explain the difference between keyword and subject searching.
Identify articles in periodicals held by the SU Library.
Retrieve a full-text article.
Print or email database records appropriately.
Standard 3
The information literate student evaluates information and its sources critically and incorporates selected information into his or her knowledge base and value system.
Goal:
The first-year student recognizes the need to evaluate information sources.Learning Objectives:
The student will be able to:Discuss the differences between information retrieved by library databases and by standard web search engines.
Explain why information found on web sites needs careful evaluation.
Apply basic evaluation criteria to web sites.
Standard 4
The information literate student, individually or as a member of a group, uses information effectively to accomplish a specific purpose.
Goal:
The first-year student gathers and uses information to complete course assignments.Learning Objectives:
The student will be able to:Produce an end product that meets the minimum assignment requirements.
Demonstrate basic organizational and communications skills.
Incorporate quoted material into original writing.
Standard 5
The information literate student understands many of the economic, legal, and social issues surrounding the use of information and accesses information ethically and legally.
Goal:
The first-year student demonstrates a basic understanding of plagiarism and documentation of sources.Learning Objectives:
The student will be able to:Express a basic definition of plagiarism.
Identify the elements that go into a citation.
Create a correct citation based on a template or example.
