Submitting Requests For Course Reserves

General Information

The purpose of course reserves is to make a limited number of materials accessible to many students. This can be done in print form or electronically.

The library houses a print Reserve Collection behind the main Circulation Desk and now offers electronic reserves, available to SU students and faculty with internet access. Faculty may also use BlackBoard, under certain circumstances, to link to articles in the library’s databases, thereby quickly and easily making articles available to students. The library staff will be happy to assist with this.

All print reserves will be listed in The Reserve Book Room where students can search by either course or instructor name. Electronic Reserves are accessed through Docutek’s EReserves system.

Print Reserves

We will continue to accept print reserves for books, videos, CDs, slides and if desired, journal articles. Personal copies of books will be accepted, if the library cannot procure a copy of its own. Sample term papers, can be put on reserve but the student must give his/her permission. Print Reserves are generally for “in library use only” but the instructor can give permission for students to take them out overnight. Please read the library’s copyright policy and bring all materials to the circulation desk.

All material must be reviewed each semester, and if no longer used, should be removed from reserve. If material will be used another semester, inform library staff so copyright compliance can be ascertained.

Electronic Reserves

Electronic Reserves are a convenient way to make reserves available to all students all the time.  Material that can easily be duplicated, such as a book chapter or journal article, can be scanned and accessed through EReserves. Students can retrieve the material from any computer on campus, or from home with an authorized password. Students can then print the material for their own use. If you use BlackBoard, a link can be provided to you that will take students directly to the reserve readings for that class.

Faculty must provide clean, single-sided photocopies of material. See Electronic Reserve Submission Guidelines  for more details.

Reserves in BlackBoard

Linking to articles in the library’s databases or directly to internet websites is possible using BlackBoard, but copyright restrictions do not give faculty free rein to do this without close examination of copyright issues. Websites are covered by copyright law, and electronic publishers may limit linking to articles in their databases. As stated above, a link to the library’s EReserve system can take students directly to the reserves for a particular class.

Copyright

In processing reserves, the library will follow the fair use guidelines of the copyright law. Faculty must also become familiar with copyright laws that apply to classroom and library copying. See Copyright and Reserves for a fuller discussion.
