How Do I Cite Sources?

Students are required to cite all their sources when writing papers or preparing presentations. This serves two purposes. Properly citing all information (quotes, paraphrases, etc.) that is not a student’s original work protects the student from charges of plagiarism. Bibliographies, also called Works Cited or References, serve to direct the reader to the various sources used by the student.

Different style guides spell out the exact formatting required for citations and bibliographies. Commonly used styles include APA, MLA and Chicago, however there are many others. Professors will tell their students which style guide to follow. Style guides can be found in the SU Library or online.

SU students, faculty and staff have access to NoodleBib, an electronic resource that assists users in creating bibliographies and citations. If you have questions about citing sources, you can always ask a reference librarian for assistance.
