Truncation

Truncation is like a wildcard. Added to the stem of a word, it will find that stem plus anything that comes after it. The symbol used to truncate a word depends upon the index, database, or Web search engine you are using.

*, ! and ? Each database sets its own rules for which truncation symbols it recognizes. All of the symbols to the left are used at various times by different databases available through the SU Library. You may have to consult an individual database’s Help screens to determine which truncator you need to apply.
