What’s a Scholarly Journal?

Many of your assignments will require you to find and use “scholarly” journal articles.

Things To Know

Scholarly journals are published by and for scholars or academic subject specialists.

When authors submit articles to these journals for publication, they are reviewed by other subject specialists before being published. This ensures the articles meet the journal’s standards of academic rigor and scholarship.

Newspapers and magazines do not qualify as scholarly journals.

Some databases allow you to limit to just these journals, but they may call them:

  • Scholarly
  • Peer Reviewed
  • Refereed
  • Academic

You can refer to a chart comparing scholarly journals to popular magazines.
